Track Training, Santa Barbara City College

Time: 6pm, approx 1 hour
  • 1600 warm up (4 laps)
  • 2 laps strides
  • stretch
  • timed trial (mile)
  • 3 lap cool-down
Meal: Protein shake @ 5:30pm - 2 full scoops in 8 oz. rice milk

I felt really great at warm-up, but still a little tired. My goal for the timed mile was 9 minutes...I did it in 8:02!! I'm excited that I was able to run it so fast, even though I'm pretty sure I pushed it too hard because I felt naseous at the end :-). The nausea went away after 1/2 a lap of cool down. Overall, this was a pretty successful workout!

Treadmill - Gym (Easy Run)

Time: 8:30pm, 30 minutes
Food: Chicken tortilla wrap (1/2) at 6:45pm, hot tea (decaf), water

I am so tired after work, I'm surprised I was able to drag myself to the gym. Very lathargic, it took about 5-10 minutes to get my mojo going. The last 5 minutes were the longest ever. I got tired again and slightly light-headed. I was also thirsty, which is no surprise because I didn't drink much water throughout the day. I stretched for about 10-15 minutes afterward, which felt really great. I need to make the time to stretch really well after every workout.

Afterwards, my calves were very sore, as were the backs of my knees. I need to discuss this again with Dr. Nicole next time I see her.

Cross Training - Spectrum Club

Time: 7:30am, 40-50 minutes
  • Elliptical @ 25 minutes
  • Upper Body Strength Training @15 min.
Breakfast: 7am, Protein Shake - 2 full scoops with rice milk

Today was supposed to be my off day, but yesterday I was so sore and so exhausted that I couldn't budge off the couch!

I felt great again this morning. I'm always so tired when I wake up but it's amazing how quickly I'm able to harness some energy. I really enjoy the feeling of working out in the morning. I am still somewhat sensitive to my shoulder, so I'm trying hard not the overdo it.

I did circuit training, one set of very slow reps to the point of muscle fatigue. Depending on the machine, weight was set from 35-80 lbs.

Hendry's Beach to Calle De Los Amigos

Time: 7am - 1 hour run
Breakfast:
Protein Shake, 2 scoops powder with rice milk at 6:45am.

After more than a week of not training due to illness, I actually felt really great on this run! It was the longest and farthest run I've ever done in my life! What an accomplishment! I ran out 30 minutes and returned in 27, probably thanks to my 4 strides. (Note: A stride is when speed is increased for short increments during a run. In this case, after 50 minutes I increased my pace to about 75% of a sprint for 30 seconds, then back to an easy pace for 30 seconds, and rinsed and repeated this 3 more times).

I skipped the first water stop, but stopped for water after about 20 minutes. About 15-20 minutes later I had Gatorade, then again about 10-15 minutes after that. I think the sugar in the Gatorade helped give me a kick for those strides at the end of the run.

Unfortunately, I got so disctracted with chatting at the end that I didn't do a very good job stretching after the run.

Team in Training

In January, I joined Team in Training and am training with them to run the San Diego Rock 'n Roll Marathon in San Diego on June 3, 2007. Team in Training is an amazing organization that recruits runners to join the team, and each of us has committed to raise at least $2400 to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It promises to be an unforgettable experience, and is for an amazing cause.

If you'd like to join me and raising money to support he Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, you may make a donation by clicking here .

Although I started my training in mid-January, I am just starting my training journal today. Be sure to check in every once in a while to see how it is going!
